Escape Pod Episode 181: Resistance

Escape Pod » EP181: Resistance, by Tobias S. Buckell

I’ve been catching up on some old episodes from Escapepod.org recently. Most of the stories are very good, some of them are quite thought-provoking. This episode was both, an entertaining story and some very good thoughts on democracy and specifically cyber-democracy.

Very well worth listening if you haven’t heard or read the story yet. I’m looking forward to reading or hearing more from this author.

SPOILER: Pan in the story has some singularity-like qualities, but he/it admits it’s not a real singularity. This  made me wonder, if someone or something managed to fake the singularity, would we recognise it as a fake? Would it slow the arrival of a real singularity, or hasten it?

  1. It’s funny that you should mention the singularity issue. I’m reading “The Cassini Division” by ken Macleod at the moment. Without wanting to give out too much information, the main characters came across a human settlement that should be post-singular but doesn’t seem to be so on the surface, so the characters ask themselves the same question in reverse.
If a post singular society tries to seem pre-singular, would we be able to tell?
    Good stuff 🙂

  2. Cool, I’ve added it to my to-read-list!
